Earl Grey

As a tea lover, I've tried many different blends over the years, but one that has always stood out to me is Earl Grey tea. (Hibiscus teas are a topic for another discussion, though.)

There's just something about the unique combination of black tea and bergamot oil that creates a flavor and aroma that is unlike any other tea I've tried.

From its rich history to its connection to pop culture, there are so many reasons why I love Earl Grey tea.

Somewhat Mysterious Origin

Earl Grey tea is one of the most popular teas in the world, known for its distinct flavor and aroma. This tea has a rich history, and its popularity continues to grow among tea lovers worldwide.

Earl Grey tea was named after Charles Grey, the 2nd Earl Grey, who was a British Prime Minister in the 1830s. The story behind the creation of Earl Grey tea is still somewhat of a mystery, but it is believed that the tea was a gift to the Earl from a Chinese diplomat.

The tea was made by mixing black tea with bergamot oil, which gave it its distinct flavor and aroma. Today, Earl Grey tea is made with a blend of black tea and bergamot oil, creating a unique taste that is loved by tea drinkers worldwide.

Brands

When it comes to popular brands that sell Earl Grey tea, there are many to choose from. One of the most well-known brands is Twinings, which has been selling tea since 1706. Twinings Earl Grey tea is made with a blend of black tea and bergamot oil, and is a favorite among tea drinkers around the world.

Another popular brand is Harney & Sons, which offers a variety of Earl Grey blends, including a classic blend, a decaf blend, and even an Earl Grey Supreme blend, which features a higher concentration of bergamot oil. Yummy!

Ay, Captain!

The most famous connection to Earl Grey tea is through the beloved Star Trek character, Captain Jean-Luc Picard.

In the TV series Star Trek: The Next Generation, Captain Picard was known for his love of Earl Grey tea, and it quickly became an iconic part of his character.

In fact, in almost every episode of the series, Captain Picard can be seen drinking a cup of Earl Grey tea, often accompanied by his signature catchphrase, "Tea, Earl Grey, hot.

This love of Earl Grey tea has since become a pop culture phenomenon, with fans of the series embracing the tea as a symbol of Captain Picard's wisdom and sophistication.

Basically, this tea was mentioned in the TNG so often that I got curious and - it grew on me!
